Slashback Thursday: Horror Films of 2010
Welcome back! We have 2010 horror films on the slab and there were several worthwhile horror films for this year. Here are a few of the flicks that got my bloody attention.
Piranha – A small town is turned into a bloodbath when a small earthquake unleasthousands of hungry piranhas. Alexandre Aja’s take on Joe Dante’s 1978 classic creature feature, pits woman (Elizabeth Shue) and man (Ving Rhames) against beasts that just so happen to have 10,000 teeth. Where most remakes take the easy way out, Aja amped up the gore to an impressive level all while retaining the elements of a great horror flick.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil – Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine) finally get their dream cabin in the woods, but their cabin adventure gets complicated when they inadvertently end up being labeled as serial killers by a group of college kids. I’m not much for horror comedies, mostly because they’re slighted more on the comedic side with only a light dusting of horror. What Tucker and Dale vs. Evil did was equally distribute the levels of comedy and horror into a wonderous funny and bloody romp.
Insidious – Renai Lambert (Rose Byrne) and her husband Josh (Patrick Wilson) start experiencing unexplained occurrences in their residence, but when their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) falls into a mysterious coma. The family soon learns that the forces in their home maybe just the beginning for them. I’ve enjoyed the entire Insidious franchise much in part to the initial film that laid some great groundwork for the other films to flourish.
I Saw The Devil – When Kim-Soohyeon’s (Byung-hun Lee), fiancee Joo-yeon (San-ha Oh) is killed by Jang Kyung-chul (Choi Min-Si), Kim-Soohyeon decides to unleash a little private justice in the most glorious and bloodiest way possible. One of the most well crafted, engrossing and gory revenge tales in modern horror today.
The Reef – Set in Australia and based on a true account, The Reef tells the story of a group of friends who gather for some fun in the sun, but when the boat they are on starts sinking they must make the decision to stay with a sinking boat or try their luck in the open water. As someone who loves a great creature feature, The Reef far exceeded my expectations in how real this movie felt in showing the true terror one has being hunted by a great white shark.
TrollHunter – When a group of students decide to investigate a series of bear attacks they run across a hunter, but this hunter doesn’t hunt the usual fare, he hunts trolls. What I think scared most people away from this film were the subtitles, but don’t let that stop you. What stands out the most are the top notch special effects and clever story.
Frozen – Director Adam Green turned his sights away from the swamp infested carnage laden Hatchet films to the snow hills of ski country. When three friends Parker (Emma Bell), Joe (Shawn Ashmore) and Dan (Kevin Zegers) get together for fun on the slopes, their adventure turns deadly when they become stuck on a ski lift. With no help in sight and their opportunities for survival lessening, tough decisions must be made. The reason this was as engrossing as it was, was the potential that this horror scenario could take place in the real world.
