Anything Horror Scott’s Worst Films of 2016

And here comes the list that makes you realize you wasted away the previous year on some really spectacularly bad films. The following list of my choices for the worst horror films of 2016 is by no means a complete list. In fact, I could’ve gone on and on and on. 2016 was a terrible year for genre films. Below, are some of the worst films of the year that really stood out to me. And being how bad this year was, the fact these films stood out as the worst of the worse really says something!! The films on this list are in no particular order.

CABIN FEVER (2016, my review)

If there was a “Most Unnecessary Remake” list, this film would top it. There is seriously no reason for this film to exist or to have been made. It is a near shot-for-shot remake of the original, and the original is way better. Some elements were changed in the remake, mainly that the creepy, “I wanna party” cop is now a woman, and she doesn’t even harbor one percent of the menace of the original character. There’s just no need for this film.

AVALANCHE SHARKS (2014)

This film finds its way onto my list because it is a dumb idea poorly executed with horrible acting and writing, and laughable digital f/x. Does that summarize it up for you? AVALANCHE SHARKS is currently streaming on Netflix.

MARTYRS (2015; my review)

If you’ve ever read this blog, then you know this remake was going to be on my list of the worst horror films of 2016. On the plus side, the acting and special f/x are well done here, but that doesn’t mean this film is at all necessary. The acting and gore were fantastic in the original film, so why not just see that one. I’m assuming that some studio execs got together and decided that MARTYRS could find a wider Western audience only more of the films meaning was explained. And explained this film is!! As I wrote in my review:

[W]e get … fumbling, over-narrated voice overs that really take away from the tension and atmosphere of the film … Plot-wise, everything was so watered down for an American audience that I started to get offended by how dumb the directors and writer (Mark L. Smith) thought we were. There’s just no impact or edge in this film.

This is a complete waste, and it drives me crazy knowing that younger audiences will watch this film and think the original is just as bad.

HAYRIDE 2 (2015)

Here’s another forgettable killer with a forgettable backstory, who kills forgettable characters in a forgettable setting. Just forget about it!! HAYRIDE 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.

HANGAR 10 (2014)

I know I saw this film…. I just know I did!! Unfortunately, I can’t remember one goddamn thing about it. Seriously, I don’t remember anything about HANGAR 10. The only reason I know I saw it is because I placed it on my “Films I Saw This Year” list. According to IMDb, this film is 83 minutes long and I can’t recall one detail about it. That is why this is on my list. HANGAR 10 is currently streaming on Netflix.

AT THE DEVIL’S DOOR (2014; Deggsy’s review)

It appears that Deggsy and I agree completely about this one. An overall terrible, sloppy, and derivative story is accented by inconsistencies and glaring plot holes. And it is a shame, because director Nicholas McCarthy creates some very atmospheric shots that are completely wasted on this one. AT THE DEVIL’S DOOR is currently streaming on Netflix.
