10 Bad Date & Relationship-Themed Horror Films

DATES

Horror films tackle many various topics. Besides the typical slasher in the woods or zombie apocalypse, horror films also deal with relationships. Some genre films are about dates that go horribly wrong while others explore bad relationships. Still, with others, we might see someone behaving terribly in their relationship. Below is a list of my ten favorite bad date and relationship horror films. After watching these films, you’ll race to delete you accounts at match.com, POF, OkCupid, and all those other dating services!!

Dates The Loved Ones

The Loved Ones (2009)

This might be the granddaddy of all “bad date” horror films. In it, a batshit crazy broad abducts the boy of her dreams, who wouldn’t take her to the prom, and with the help of her father, makes a prom night at their house that you won’t soon forget. This film is gory, disturbing, and gets very dark in many places. Don’t miss this one!!

Dates Fatal Attraction

Fatal Attraction (1987)

An oldie but goodie!! Since 1987, this film has been a warning to every guy out there who might be thinking about cheating on their lady. Oh yeah, and don’t have a pet bunny.

Dates Antichrist

Antichrist (2009)

A couple mourns the loss of their son by retreating to the woods. There the two engage in sex and genital mutilation. This is a film that is very difficult to watch and shows just how screwed up a couple can become over the death of a child.

Dates The Shining

The Shining (1980)

Another film that explores the deteriorating relationship of a husband and wife. Jack takes a job as the caretaker of the Overlook hotel in the off season. The hotel has a strange effect on old Jack, and before you can say, “Here’s Johnny,” Jack is trying to kill his family. Yeah, this is a rather dysfunctional relationship.

Dates Broken

Broken (2006)

One of the most brutal films I’ve ever seen!! This is a level of nihilism that would make the most hardened French existentialist shudder. The lead character’s name is Hope, and she gets brutalized and tormented the entire film as she tries to survive her tortures in order to save her daughter. The relationship here is between Hope and her tormentor. It’s a lot deeper than it first appears. You will need to watch many hours of silly comedies to shake this one out of your head.

Dates Calvaire

Calvaire (2004)

The twisted relationship in this film is between Marc and Bartel. Marc winds up at Bartel’s house after his van breaks down and what happen there will stay with you for many weeks after seeing this film. This is a slow-burner and watching it two or three times is recommended. There’s a lot going on here psychologically and physically and it is easy to miss some of the subtle nuances of the story. This is a must see film!!

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

This goes under the “my boyfriend is a dick” category. Here’s some relationship advice from me to you, ladies. If it takes the end of the world for your boyfriend to start treating you right, then there’s something seriously wrong there. Shaun (Simon Pegg) seems like he wants to be a nice guy, but he’s so self-absorbed that you;ll want to slap him through the screen. Some guys will never change.

Dates Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity (2007)

Micah is another shining example of how not to be a shitty boyfriend!! This guy is a class-A jerk. Micah thinks his condo is haunted, so instead of moving he and his girlfriend to safety, he buys a bunch of cameras to set up all around the house to try and capture the paranormal activity. As if this wasn’t bad enough, Micah also does a bunch of crap to piss the demon off and make it angry–which results in his death and his girlfriend’s possession.

Dates The Evil Dead

The Evil Dead (1981)

There’s no doubt about it, Ash is a pretty awesome dude. But if you’re thinking of dating him you may want to think again. His girlfriend not only gets possessed by the evil dead, but when she comes back, Ash disposes her in the more gruesome of ways.

Dates Nekromantik

Nekromantik (1987)

I think the IMDb page’s description says it best:

“A street sweeper who cleans up after grisly accidents brings home a full corpse for him and his wife to enjoy sexually, but is dismayed to see that his wife prefers the corpse over him.”

Perhaps the sweetest threesome ever put on film. The really screwed up thing here is that the wife prefers the dead, rotting corpse to her warm, living husband. And just wait for the scene when Betty puts a condom on a led pipe and attaches it to the rotted corpse. Yeah, that happens!!
