2 Short Films: A Favor (2015) & Postpartum (2015)

Shorts postpartum

A FAVOR and POSTPARTUM are two short horror films directed by Izzy Lee and written by Christopher Hallock (Lee co-wrote POSTPARTUM). These two shorts couldn’t be more different, but the final result of both is that they are a lot of fun. These two shorts differ in tone, atmosphere, and overall story, but both are effective and both hit the mark.

A FAVOR is about a guy, Jackson (Shaun Callaghan), who is just trying to enjoy his day off from work when he is interrupted by a call from a friend who asks him for a huge favor. The tone here is light and there’s even a few slapstick moments. Something I notice in all of Izzy Lee’s shorts is that the acting is always top-notch. The actors here play the comedic moments with reserve and don’t go overboard. A FAVOR hits all the right notes and is as a fun as much as it is a warning to choose your friends carefully!!

Shorts favor

POSTPARTUM is a very different film from the one above. Where A FAVOR is lighthearted and fun, POSTPARTUM is serious and dark. In this short, a friendly neighbor  goes to check in on Holly (Kasey Lansdale), a new mom who she hasn’t seen much of around the apartment building. The neighbor’s good intentions quickly dissolve as she discovers horrors beyond her wildest thoughts inside Holly’s apartment. As with A FAVOR, POSTPARTUM is well acted, beautifully shot, and is well written. The story never falls into the realm of exploitation as it explores a serious issue. Bravo to Lee for pulling off such a disturbing and effective short film.
