AMC’s Preacher
When I first got into comic book reading, Garth Ennis’s Preacher is where I started out and I must say it was liking being thrown into the deep end of the ocean! Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a wayward man with a colorful background who comes back home to take up the pulpit like he had promised his father. Unbeknownst to him the almighty universe has different plans for him.

I’ll admit I was a bit weary when this project was officially announced, due in part to the continuous stop and go of getting this series off the ground. One of my biggest reservations was that Seth Rogen would be at the helm. Aside from the fact that he’s a one-dimensional character actor he never screamed comic book reader to me. But, he professed his love for the comic series in countless interviews so, I had no other choice than to follow his and Evan Goldberg’s vision of Preacher.
The pilot episode starts off with a bang, literally in the form of a minister being consumed by an entity and then subsequently blowing up. The episode then moves into Jesse’s hometown in Texas and begins to slowly unfold his journey of embracing his new gospel ways and dealing with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga). Jesse will later meet Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), a loud mouth drunken Irish vampire. As if Jesse’s plate wasn’t full enough with those two he still has to deal with his colorful congregation and understanding the turmoil that is inside of him.
I was surprised at how well their adaption played out, staying on the path of the original source material, but laying in changes to the benefit of the series was a nice combination. Dominic Cooper embodies Jesse and his absorption of the role will pay off in spades if Rogen and company can keep the series on track. A lot of credit can be made due to the fact that they were wise enough to get the original creators Garth Ennis and Steve Dillion (who also serve as co-executive producers) on board.
It’s easy to see this show will be moving in the horror fandom’s much like AMC’s current juggernaut, The Walking Dead. Cassidy will mostly be the breakout fan favorite, with his crass wit and his intoxicated humor, but Tulip will be hot on his heels as a close second, considering she is absolutely amazing. I really love that her character got a complete makeover when she was brought to the small screen and this adjustment fits perfectly in the Preacher world. Tulip is a wild child, who makes her own rules and is violently creative and by the end of the pilot episode you will want to be her partner in crime.
Although starting out in a slow burn fashion, those that have already read the comic have a anchor in the series, but those that have not experienced the written word of Ennis will still want to hear what Jesse Custer has to preach!
