Scientist Boris Karloff is executed for illegal work on suspended animation, only to be revived by his assistant so the two can plot a campaign of revenge, in “The Man They Could Not Hang” (1939). In the offbeat sci-fi tale “The Man With Nine Lives” (1940), scientist Karloff develops a cancer cure that involves putting patients in suspended animation and treating them with an experimental serum. Accidentally frozen along with a group of test subjects and thawed out years later to learn that his miracle drug has long been lost, Karloff is driven to the brink of madness as he tries to make another batch.
