Lionsgate to Remake Cube

Made in 1997, CUBE is one of those movies that you may not have seen. Directed by Vincenzo Natali and written by Natali, André Bijelic, and Graeme Manson, CUBE contains elements of horror, mystery, sci-fi, and a thriller in it. The original film is about seven strangers with no apparent connections finding themselves in a large cube that moves. There are several rooms in the cube and most of the rooms contain deadly traps. Think if Kafka wrote SAW!!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Roy Lee and Jon Spaihts (one of the co-writers of PROMETHEUS) will be producing a re-imaging of CUBE for Lionsgate. Attached to direct is up-and-coming director Saman Kesh, who gained some fame with his short film CONTROLLER:

Using the original setup of seven strangers trapped in a giant cube-like structure,Cubed is described as a sci-fi survival thriller about artificial intelligence, humanity and the birth of a new “digital” race.

Philip Gawthorne is writing the script based off of Kesh’s original take.

I think CUBE is perfect for a remake. The original is very well-made, but there’s been a lot of technological advances since it came out back in 1997. Plus, after the film EX MACHINA and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, I think there’s going to be an increased interest in artificial intelligence.

What do you think? Is CUBE a good candidate for an update/re-imaging?

Stay Bloody!!!

  1. I am scared of this. I LOVED the original Cube (the sequels, not so much.) Maybe they should remake the sequels instead.

  2. I have to agree with Alienredqueen: I loved the original. I seem to remember not actually, actively hating the first sequel. But the next one was pretty bad. I’ll be interested to see if they wind up doing a remake, a reboot or, in essence, a sequel. In either case, I’m certainly far more interested in this than I am the Poltergeist remake!

  3. Looking at old movies , with virtual reality here we should take a new look at The 13th Floor . Not so far off from the future now.
