Not too many horror releases this week, but there’s plenty of classic films. See anything in here that looks good? Let’s get to it:
BEDLAM (2015)
A man tormented by ghosts from the past seeks advice from his late mother’s doctor about erasing his troubling visions. The prescription is a stay at Bedlam–and when the patient follows doctor’s orders, he soon finds himself in the midst of a world of terror and nightmare, trapped inside a mad prison that holds frightening secrets of its own. CHLOE (1934)
Atmospheric mix of drama and horror finds an elderly black voodoo mistress returning to her Louisiana bayou home with her light-skinned daughter, Chloe, for revenge against the white plantation owner responsible for her husband’s lynching. There’s a shocking secret, however, in Chloe’s past that could change everything. Taboo in its day for its depiction of interracial romance; with Georgette Harvey, Reed Howes, and silent beauty Olive Borden (in her last film) as Chloe. FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM (1987)
A vexed lover breaks his date the hard way; a carnival sword swallower gets digestion problems; a merciless hood finds out the drawbacks to life eternal; and a Civil War traitor runs afoul of a different sort of “brat pack.” Vincent Price makes his final appearance in a horror film, featured in the framing story of this quiversome quartet of horror stories that also stars Clu Gulager, Cameron Mitchell, Susan Tyrrell, and Rosalind Cash. GHOST STORY: THE TURN OF THE SCREW (2009)
Relocating the Victorian-era setting of the Henry James novella to the 1920s, this visually stimulating made-for-TV thriller from Great Britain stars “Downton Abbey” star Michelle Dockery as Ann, the governess hired to care for two recently orphaned children living in an English country house. Terror soon takes hold of her as she begins to see ghosts of the previous governess and a servant who were lovers. With Eva Sayer, Josef Lindsay, and Dan Stevens. 90 min. KISS ME MONSTER (1969)
Two beautiful female spies pose as nightclub performers while trying to learn the truth behind a demented professor’s experiments on his remote Caribbean island. LADY OF THE LAKE (1965)
A writer arrives in a remote lakeside Italian town in search of a lover who worked at a local hotel, only to be told that she killed herself some time earlier.
