Over at RIP, Women in Horror Month Lasts all Year Long!!

Having the shortest month of the year as the designated “Women in Horror” month always seemed pretty stupid to me. The contribution of female director’s is something that should be celebrated and encouraged all throughout the year, and the good folks over at the RIP Horror International Film Festival feel the same way. Check out the press release:

Hollywood, CA – March 2nd, 2015. February is known for being the Women in Horror Recognition Month, but according to L.J. Rivera, founder and director of the RIP Horror International Film Festival, the vital contribution of women to the genre must be celebrated all year round.

Starting this year, the RIP Horror International Film Festival has created the Best Female Filmmaker Award which will be granted to the work of an outstanding female director of horror films. This prestigious honor will be added to the already exciting lineup, including awards for Legend of Horror and Rising Star.

“I want to contribute to the empowerment of women working in the business for the advancement of the horror genre. Award winning female filmmakers like Maria Olsen, Adriana Polito, Patricia Chica, and Jessica Cameron are making the difference. We want to support the achievements of outstanding filmmakers like these who are creating some of the most exciting and innovative work in the genre, as well as promote undiscovered talent waiting to explode onto the scene,” says the festival founder L.J. Rivera.

Additionally, the festival will unveil the new darkly exquisite statuette called the “Bloody Doll Award.” These dolls are the original hand-crafted creations of brilliant designer Deborah Blount of Deborahz Demented Dollz and will surely become a highly sought after collector’s item. http://www.facebook.com/deborahzdementeddollz

The point of Women in Horror Month is to never need a Women in Horror Month.

February was picked because of the 28 day menstrual cycle. No month will ever have enough days – it should be all year. But it’s not. It wasn’t. And it isn’t. We are working every day to change that.

For discussion sake: I wonder if RIP should also consider that women might not need there own award and should instead focus on equal playing field for general awards.

What triggered the creation of this award? I can’t help but wonder if not for WiHM they would have even thought to do this. But, these domino effects are the entire point regardless of what I think of them.

I just want to see equal opportunity horror.

    • In a perfect world this wouldn’t be an issue. I never understood why there aren’t more women in horror behind the camera. There shouldn’t be a horror month for women because they should be represented all year round.
