New Horror Releases Update: John Carpenter’s THE WARD
Let the buzzing begin for John Carpenter’s long awaited return to the big screen!! I’ve been following his latest project THE WARD for a couple months now and was pretty shocked that Carpenter didn’t say anything about it at the Texas Frightmare Weekend a few months ago. But now news is starting to trickle out and I’m excited. I’m not gonna sit here and pretend that everything Carpenter has ever made is a classic. We all know that’s not the case (I’m looking at you GHOSTS OF MARS, ESCAPE FROM L.A., & MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN). But when he’s on his game he can really hit them outta the park (PRINCE OF DARKNESS, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS)!! So what’s THE WARD about? Check out the plot summary:
THE WARD is an intense psychological thriller set in a mental institution where a young woman, Kristen, is haunted by a mysterious and deadly ghost. As danger creeps closer, she comes to realize that this ghost might be darker than she could have imagined.
Kristen, who is in her early 20’s, wakes to find herself bruised, cut, drugged, and held against her will in a remote ward of Chamberlain Psychiatric Hospital. She is completely disoriented with no idea why she was brought to this place and no memory of her life.
The other patients in the ward, four equally troubled girls, offer no answers, and Kristen quickly realizes things are not as they seem. The air is heavy with secrets, and at night, when the hospital is dark and foreboding, she hears strange and disturbing sounds. It appears they are not alone.
One by one the girls disappear, and Kristen must find a way out of this hellish place before the ghost comes for her, too. As she struggles to escape, she will uncover a truth far more dangerous and horrifying than anyone could have imagined.
Carpenter doing a ghost story? Sign me the fuck up!! There’s been no trailer yet and still no word on a release date, but hopefully we’ll find out soon enough. Oh! Oh! Oh! (jumping up and down in my jammies) I can’t wait! I adore Carpenter. I don’t care how others feel about him. I don’t want him to be a Scorcese. I want him to be what he is–a guy who gets a certain era of filmmaking and still remembers how to scare an adolescent. Him doing a ghost story—sooooo exciting. Now, am I wrong, or didn’t he do “The Fog” which was a ghost story? It wasn’t super scary, but hey it was atmospheric. I can hardly wait. I expect you to be right on top of this because I don’t want to miss it. You’re my hero.

THE FOG as a ghost story … I’d say yes and no. The “pirates” started off as being explained as ghosts, but they are too corporeal in my opinion. I’d consider them more like ghouls. But regardless, THE FOG is definitely one of Carpenter’s best.

I’m excited about this! John Carpenter has frightened me more than a few times! If done right, this should prove a truimphant return! And did you see where they are filming? Creepy!

The sets do look pretty damn creepy Katie. I love Carpenter; his successes far out weigh his mistakes (I even enjoyed VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED). Carpenter is one of those rare directors who has such an amazing eye for setting up shots and milking every bit of terror and horror out of them. He even managed to make 2 of the best episodes of the extremely disappointing MASTER’S OF HORROR series (“Cigarette Burns” and “Pro Life”); which if you’ve seen MoH you know what a shit-fest that series was!!

Carpenter managed to look like every adult male who lived in Southern NJ in the 70’s and 80s!!! Love that mustache …. eat your heart out Tom Selleck.

Scott, I am still a huge Hall & Oates fan (music guilty pleasure). John Oates is a very cool dude and he recognized the fact that his stache become so iconic of the times that it had literally taken on a life of its own. He realized this when he finally shaved it off and people said “Oates, where’s your stache?” Well some smart ass comedy animators ran with the premise and came up with J-Stache and John even lended his voice to the series. It is friggin hilarious and so captures that 70’s/80’s era.

Carpenter reminds me of a really cool blues singer. Sometimes he can really belt it out, and get the joint rocking. And sometimes it seems like he’s just going through the motions, or is distracted by something the rest of us can’t see, but what he puts out is still better than a lot of others in his field, and is never boring.
The Ward is looking very, very promising…
